These photos
show representative vintage pens from Sheaffer and
Parker. I am especially partial to the Sheaffer Snorkel series which
dates to the 1950s. They tend to be a little quirky, but make
excellent writers. The Parker 51 is touted as the "pen of pens" by
many collectors and consequently nice examples bring a very hefty
price. I had the good fortune to be a buyer when they were still made
and not as "collectible." These models date to
the 40s and 50s. The 51 has a hooded nib, not as likely to collapse
under excessive downward pressure which may partially explain its
popularity today. It's a matter of preference, of course. What would
collectibles be without that?

Parker recently introduced a replica of the 51, undoubtedly due in
part to the popularity/reputation with collectors. Price: $350. Sheaffer
has not responded with a replica of the Snorkel - yet.
