Penmanship
Practice Movements
Pull Movement
This is one of the more important exercises in writing
practice. Move the pen on the paper in a light contact,
make the lines fine and light keeping them close
together – about a pen width apart.
Circle Movement
Start this exercise with the pulling movement, then
move on to the direct oval or circle movement. For
the pulling portion, make 10 downward lines for each
practice segment, then begin the circle movement.
Make the ovals in groups of seven, with minimal lift
of the pen. Next, make the ovals going around five
to 7 times for each. Finally, practice the capital
O. Try to increase the speed of the movement as you
practice.
Loop Movement
The loop is composed of the oval and a straight line. The
pulling movement and the oval movement must be practiced
extensively before attempting this movement. The first stroke
of the loop is a decided curve, with the downward line made
straight. The b is formed using the loop and the last part
of the small w; the h by the loop and the last part of the
m or arch in the n. Please note the o is a single space letter,
as are the e, n, c, and v. The double space letters are those
like the w and the m. Also, note the height of the ascenders
in this exercise.
